Progressive pied coturnix quail Genetics 

The progressive pied gene in Coturnix (Japanese) quail is a colour mutation that causes white feathers to gradually increase with each moult. Unlike many pied patterns that are fixed at hatch, birds carrying the progressive pied mutation often become increasingly white as they age.

Key characteristics include:

Chicks hatch with only small white patches or minimal signs of the mutation.

After each moult, additional feathers may grow in white.

Older birds can become extensively white while still retaining patches of their original colour.

Inheritance

Pp (heterozygous): Usually shows moderate progressive white patterning.

PP (homozygous): Often displays much more extensive white, sometimes nearly all white.

However, unlike some well-studied poultry colour genes, the exact genetic locus responsible for progressive pied in Coturnix has not been definitively identified in the scientific literature. Most inheritance information comes from breeding records rather than molecular genetic studies.
